Beanie and Blanket Appeal

Together, keeping our community warm

Each winter, The Surf Club Mooloolaba helps to provide relief to those where shelter and items to keep warm is not always readily available.

On any given night in Queensland, up to 20,000 people – children, mums, dads, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters, are without a home. Some sleep rough, rugged up in alleyways or in shop doorways, others stay in crises accommodation, while still more seek shelter with friends and family.

For the past two years we have asked members of the community to help fill our 1923 replica Club House which is located just past reception, with beanies, blanket, sleeping bags, gloves, scarves, jackets, and any items which keep us all warm.

“This year we were once again overwhelmed by the generosity of members within our community. It was great to see everyone come together to help those people less fortunate, especially at a time of the year where the cold can dampen spirits”, said Bryan Jones, General Manager of The Surf Club Mooloolaba.

The Appeal usually kicks off in June and runs until early July, with collected items distributed to local community organisations who assist those in our community in need each day.

In 2018, all donated items went to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, who provide an open house emergency relief program, which at time can assist more than 25 individual/families each week, with food and items to keep warm and dry.

The items collected this year (2019) were donated to The Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre (MNC). The MNC is a community organisation where services are provided to connect people with their community in a friendly, accessible and respectful environment. MNC is a link between individual needs, and community resources within the Sunshine Coast Region.

The Surf Club Mooloolaba extends an enormous thank you to all those who support this Appeal. It is this great community spirit which continues to help make a difference each Winter.

Christmas Appeal supporting the local Salvation Army

The Giving Tree

The Surf Club Mooloolaba provides Christmas relief for local families in need.

The Giving Tree serves as a collection point of food and toys for those in our local community who would otherwise go without at this special time of the year. All donations are then forwarded to the local Salvation Army for distribution in time for Christmas Day.

Bryan Jones, General Manager of The Surf Club Mooloolaba, said “Christmas is a magical time of the year. Sadly though, thousands of families go without. Each year, with your help we can make a difference.”

“It’s the Season to give. As a licensed Community Club, we are in the fortunate position to assist those in our community less privileged. Let’s continue to come together and help those families who may otherwise go without at Christmas. By donating food or a toy, we can bring joy and a smile to families, especially Children on Christmas morning”, said Mr. Jones.

The Surf Club Mooloolaba would love it if you could help us help families in our local community.

Let’s all come together, make a difference and give hope at Christmas.

Unveiling of the Christmas Giving Tree will be advised in the lead up to Christmas.

For more information contact Reception on 07 5444 1300.

Inspiring Sunshine Coast youth

The relationship between The Surf Club Mooloolaba and the Brisbane Broncos was formed at the end of 2016 with a vision to be actively involved in the community by addressing issues in today’s society and encouraging personal brand and respect within our younger generations.

With this partnership came Jack Reed, former NRL Brisbane Broncos player and local Sunshine Coast Superstar.

Jack is passionate about visiting our local schools, delivery presentations and being active on the oval. In our local High Schools, Jack, conducts presentations which cover a variety of issue in today’s society – Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Relationships and Personal Branding, Cyber Safety and Social Media, whilst Primary Schools are presented with topics which encourage smarter choices around health, as well as personal and career inspirations and goals, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Jack has worked with and will continued to work with all 12 Junior Rugby League Clubs on the Sunshine Coast, helping to promote Rugby League and provide support and knowledge to their coaching teams. Jack has also visited more than 40 schools, reaching approximately 10,000 students in 2018, spreading his positive messages to our younger community.

The Surf Club Mooloolaba is proud to be associated with this program and supports Jack Reed with his School, Junior Rugby League Clubs and other community group visits.

Annually, an event called “Broncos on the Beach” is held at The Surf Club Mooloolaba. It is a fantastic event, which we are lucky to have had some great past and present Broncos players apart off. Each year all money raised at this event, helps keep Jack doing what he loves, spending quality time with our younger community.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Proudly presented by The Surf Club Mooloolaba

At 5:00am on 25th April of each year, approximately 10,000 people from our community gather to honour and remember all Australians who served and continue to serve, at an extremely moving ANZAC Day Dawn service on Mooloolaba Beach.

Ex-serviceman along with many Members of both The Surf Club Mooloolaba and Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club who served in the Vietnam War, dedicate a lot of time each year to organise the ANZAC DAY Dawn Service. Those involved feel it’s a great honour to organise an event which acknowledges the ANZAC’s and which provides a service where everyone can spend time to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many brave men and women.

The 2019 Mooloolaba ANZAC Day Dawn Service was its 12th consecutive year. Staying true to its tradition, it continues to make the service more appealing to the younger members by involving our nippers. Wreaths are laid at the foot of a large image which is known to be the last soldier. And during the minute silence, approximately 85 men and women raise their ores from Surf Boats off the shore.

We greatly appreciated the support from the Sunshine Coast Council each year. It is with this support that The Surf Club Mooloolaba is able to provide a service which adequately honours the contribution made by our countryman to the growing number of people who gather each year. To provide a service which clearly recognises the sacrifices made by many to the freedoms that we recognise today.
